Esmeralda Melhado was born in Mexico City in the early 1970s—a time of music, color, and a collective yearning for peaceful and loving coexistence among people. Thanks to her mother’s work as a painter, she had her first encounters with art through color. Later, she discovered a love for the written word; and, always seeking new paths, she has worked—entirely self-taught—with fabrics, paints, embroidery, sound, and color, creating garments and decorative pieces across various styles and techniques. Among other events and workshops, she participated in the 2011 “Reyna de Corazones” (Queen of Hearts) exhibition alongside artist Patricia Wilmott, contributing ten collage-style banners depicting the Virgin of Guadalupe. Her journey also led her to explore the connection between life and sound; she became certified in “Healing Sounds” in Austin, Texas, and in 2017, she led a therapeutic workshop titled “Expres-Arte entre el sonido y el color” (Express-Art through Sound and Color), where sound became a living presence in the participants’ paintings—a practice known as Applied Chromesthesia.

In 2024, while living in the Riviera Maya, she discovered through workshops with local artists that the art of Batik held unique qualities that opened up a new form of expression for her. Now residing in the Keweenaw region, she is presenting her batik pieces for the first time—works where light plays among natural elements and dyed colors, all created using this ancient technique in entirely innovative ways.

“There are many things I love about batik. One is the process itself; because it relies on wax-resist blocking, it shifts one’s internal interpretation of what is being observed. At certain stages, what looks dark is actually light (or will become so), what appears yellow will turn green, and what is blocked out will become luminous… What is blocked out becomes luminous. Just like life!”
